We know that a great bar means a very happy evening ahead after your wedding day meal. That’s why we never stop exploring (and testing!) what’s best to have available behind your bar.
In ever-increasing numbers, serious beer drinkers are shunning mass-produced beers and seeking something distinctively different, flavoursome and complex. With this in mind, the bar managers at GG met last month in Greenwich, South East London at The Meantime Brewery which is situated just a few hundred yards from the River Thames. It was time to study beer!
Meantime was founded in 1999 by an enthusiastic brewer and started its life in his flat in nearby Charlton. Its most popular brews include London Lager, London Pale Ale, Yakima Red and London Porter. The original home-brew location had to change when demand spiralled and the beers are now produced just down the road from a modern 120,000 hectolitre unit, which in places is so hi-tech it would not look out of place on the set of a Bond movie!
It was a truly tough Tuesday at the GG office as Master Brewer Rod guided us around the brewery and talked us through every single stage of production – everything from the selection of the finest British barley through to the Mash Tun, the Hop Tub and the all-important and truly craft-defining minimum 6-week maturing process. It’s the high-level of care and stewardship by real brewers which makes such beers really distinctive crowd-pleasers. Getting the beers right at your wedding will make lots of people very happy as they celebrate into the night!
For winter weddings either via bottle or on draft, dark, full-bodied beers will be met with great appreciation by those in the know. For summer weddings, chilled Pilsners and delicious Pale Ales put big smiles on happy faces. We know this for a fact because we’ve carefully tasted them all!
Meantime happen to play host to the largest privately-owned collection of beers in the world. From Belgian Trappist Monk ales through to American West Coast Pacific lagers – they were all here to handle….if not to drink!
Whatever questions you have regarding the bar at your wedding party, our bar teams can answer them. It’s not just beer we know about – we can talk you through all of our wines, spirits, cocktails and soft drinks range too. The later part of your big day is a great opportunity to let your hair down and host a great party – our teams are constantly checking what’s hot and what’s not.
A leisurely early Summer’s evening Thames Clipper cruise back below Tower Bridge and home. Well home that is via Borough Market in the London Bridge District to check on one or two other craft beers. Just to be sure we absolutely know our stuff. Experts must always be on top of their game after all!
